For experienced drivers who came to Montreal with a foreign driving license:

As an experienced driver, you have the right to drive a motor vehicle in Quebec with a valid international driver’s license for the first six months following your arrival to Canada.

In order to get the Quebec driving license, you must complete these 3 steps:

1. Open a file at the SAAQ:

Set up a date by calling the following number: 514 873-7620.
Next, you will be asked to provide the following original documentations:

  • Your foreign driver’s license
  • An identification card
  • A document of Canadian immigration status
  • An official translation of all of your documents (optional).

Any foreign driving license will be recognized as valid up to 12 months from the day of your arrival to Canada.

2. Theoretical Exam:

To pass this exam you may use our Driving School services, or you can study on your own by reading the following books: “Guide de la route” and “Véhicule de promenade“. You can test your knowledge by using the online sample tests at the SAAQ website.

You can take the exam in either English or French, and you will be allowed to use a non-electronic dictionary. Alternatively, you may take the exam using a Russian translator.

3. Pass the practical exam.

GOOD LUCK!
